I am pleased to provide these words of introduction to the ITU TELECOM World 2003 edition of Connect-World.

ITU TELECOM WORLD 2003 is a unique global telecommunications event has provided an unrivalled platform for strategic debate and business networking since 1971, bringing together the industry’s top CEOs, government ministers and regulators.

TELECOM WORLD 2003, under the theme “Helping the World Communicate”, will address recent market challenges and forge a common view on how the industry can rebuild confidence and generate new sources of growth. The event will confront the new realities facing the industry and the critical issues, policies, technologies and standards that are shaping the nature and direction of .telecommunications.

ITU has long provided the leading platform for debate on critical issues within the world of telecommunications. This year’s TELECOM Forum is no exception. With the theme ‘Reconnect’, it is set to play a pivotal role in enabling our industry as a whole to address the new challenges and opportunities we face today.

The TELECOM Forum includes six days of presentations and debate on critical industry issues featuring discussions on topics ranging from broadband and mobility, and focusing on new business models and new revenue streams. It will also tackle a range of areas central to the growth and development of global telecommunications.

TELECOM Forum will include a roundtable with industry leaders to discuss the state of the industry and its future and a special session on “The World Summit on the Information Society” (WSIS.) This will the WSIS event taking place in Geneva, 10-12 December, 2003 and in Tunisia, 16-18 November, 2005. The Summit will focus on bridging the digital divide and on building a secure foundation for the information society.

The first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society, which is to held less than two months after ITU TELECOM WORLD 2003, will be a unique opportunity for world leaders to agree, collectively and individually, to shape the future of the Information Society and to harness the revolution in information and communication technology (ICT) to the service of the development goals they set for their countries and for the international community at the United Nations Millennium Summit of September 2000.

To this end, WSIS will help develop a vision of an inclusive global information society where all people without distinction are empowered to freely create, share, and utilize information and knowledge for their economic, social, cultural and political development.

The combination of World Telecom 2003 and the World Summit on the Information Society creates an historic opportunity in the history of telecommunications and ITU. With the participation of heads of state, industry and government leaders coupled with timely, thought provoking programmes, participants are guaranteed a far-reaching debate that will no doubt shape the telecommunications landscape and information society of the future.

It has often been said that the best way to invent the future is to create it. I thank you for your interest in the work of the International Telecommunication Union and your assistance in helping us create a future where the tools of communication make the world a more equitable, peaceful and sustainable place for all of humanity.
